Somali Camel Milk: :

Somalia’s main economy depends on livestock and animal herding. Somalis about 60%- 70% are considered nomads who depend on livestock for their livelihoods.

Shabelle Agro Corporation has a long-term plan to become the main supplier of camel milk in Mogadishu area and surroundings and animal feeding products.

With that in mind, we have established all-inone farm of approximately eight (8) hectares of farmland located not far from Mogadishu. We also dedicated 10 hectares for animal feeding (grass and sorghum) for the the animals. The farmland is adjacent to the river water—for the animal drink water and for the irrigation of the grans and sorghum. These facilities, all in Afgoiye will help expand the livestock project which we have started with small scale and plan to gradually pick up to become the main supplier of camel milk and animal feeding producer..

Camel is considered to be the backbone of Somalia’s resilience economics. A country where environmental challenges are high, the survivor of the livestock is the camel.
During the previous central government, camel was exported to abroad—but since the collapse of the previous government— number of camels have increased to a level that Somalia is one of the largest livestock in the world.

The average price for a health and strong camel is anywhere between $1,250—2,000. The she camel is higher in price as it will give milk and more camels.
The average milking of the she camel is between 8—10 liters per day (two times per day). The she camel produces more healthy milk when she gives birth to baby camels and during the baby’s infancy.
